The Traffic Management Center will assist in managing traffic and congestion throughout the City of Concord and will include the interconnection of 100-130 signalized intersections, installation of 20-30 traffic surveillance cameras and retrofit a building to serve as the central control station for traffic management. The service area population is approximately 80,000 and the Center will serve interstate and intrastate traffic utilizing I-85, US-29, US-601, NCDOT primary highways passing through the area on a daily basis and major tourist destinations such as Concord Mills Mall and the Lowes Motor Speedway. Concord Mills is the number one tourist attraction in the State of North Carolina. In 2005, 17.5 million people visited the facility. Additionally, Lowes Motor Speedway hosts 1 million visitors each year. This project is a valuable use of taxpayer funds because it addresses an immediate need for congestion relief as building additional lanes on major corridors is cost and time prohibitive. Future economic development in the area is strongly dependent on the Traffic Management Center being operational within three years as Air Quality Non-Conformity problems will prohibit the attraction of development to the region.
