The Town of Mooresville's wastewater treatment plant currently services 5 million gallons per day (MGD). To keep up with the Town's current and expected growth, the Town plans to expand the WWTP facility to 19 MGD in phases. In the near term, the Town of Mooresville needs to move forward with an interim phase, which is a 2 MGD expansion that will expand the existing facility include a 2 MGD package plant and influent pump station, effluent filters, UV disinfection, cascade aeration, and emergency backup power generation. The interim capacity of the expanded facility will be 7.5 MGD. In the last ten years, the Town of Mooresville's population has more than doubled. It is estimated that between 2000 and 2025, the Town's population will increase 146.2 percent. The continued growth of the area is dependent on the ability to treat wastewater. Without additional capacity to treat wastewater, the strong growth of this area could be drastically affected. The Town's expanded wastewater treatment facility can become a regional provider. The Town has already instituted an agreement with the neighboring Town of Troutman, as well as Catawba County, to treat their wastewater.
